Maybe Once Again

Maybe once again, I can pick up the phone
Maybe once again, I can offer a suggestion
Maybe once again, I can contribute an idea
Maybe once again, I can believe your compliment
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can benefit from this beautiful day
Maybe once again, I can enjoy this gorgeous sunset
Maybe once again, I can smile for no reason
Maybe once again, I can laugh uncontrollably
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can weep for your loss
Maybe once again, I can empathize
Maybe once again, I can sympathize
Maybe once again, I can offer hope
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can hold my head high
Maybe once again, I can meet you halfway
Maybe once again, I can look you in the eye
Maybe once again, I can be your friend
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can be grateful
Maybe once again, I can believe in myself
Maybe once again, I can rest my head on your shoulder
Maybe once again, I can offer a shoulder for you
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can help others less fortunate
Maybe once again, I can remember those who I’ve chosen to forget
Maybe once again, I can follow through on the promises I make
Maybe once again, I can be what you need me to be
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can make you feel welcome
Maybe once again, I can feel like I’m not letting you down
Maybe once again, I can love you unconditionally
Maybe once again, I can be what you need me to be
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can grasp how to pray
Maybe once again, I can learn to apologize
Maybe once again, I can ask for your forgiveness
Maybe once again, I can make up for these lost years
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can learn how to take rejection
Maybe once again, I can see that I might not be in your way
Maybe once again, I can manage when things become difficult
Maybe once again, I can accept things as they are
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
...Maybe once again

Maybe once again, I can accept my faults
Maybe once again, I can like the person I am
Maybe once again, I can be alone without being afraid
Maybe once again, I can feel like I belong
Maybe once again, I can be happy
Maybe once again…
......Maybe once again

During a time when I was writing a lot of dark poetry, I felt like I needed to write something that conveyed some sort of hope. I was putting my third poetry book together and I felt like I had poem after poem after poem that were sad, depressing, angry, or hopeless. It was important for me to include something positive, both for the book and for me personally. I couldn't feel anything for the longest time, but then one night I dug deep down inside and thought to myself "Even though you aren't happy and it feels like it is impossible to put onto paper anything that is happy, just imagine for a second if there is at least a chance that you could feel good about something again. This is what I came up with. I like this poem a lot. It was the perfect way to end my third poetry book.
