Wasn’t Meant To Be
No matter what I do or how hard you try
We both know our lives aren’t what we want them to be
And no matter what you do or how hard I try
We’re losing our days, knowing that this won’t work
So we should end this now
It wasn’t meant to be
When it’s good, it’s good
But when it’s real, it’s wrong
Each day we continue
Is a day that we miss
A day that we miss
Searching for something more
We want to feel secure; we both want to feel free
We fight, and we flight still discovering our being
We wanted to think we knew better
To prove the doubters wrong
But we were young and inexperienced
And still learning the game
So we should end this now
It wasn’t meant to be
We wait and pretend
Because it’s too hard
Too hard to admit
Admit that we were wrong
We wait and pretend
Because we do care
Care for each other
And the hurt we will feel
We wait and pretend
Because there is love
Love that will bind us
Today and forever
And though we know things will change, they already have
We can’t change yesterday, but we can change today
Friends we can be; we’ve done it before
The excitement lost can be replaced with something new
But let’s end this today
It’s what we both need
Future there’s not; kindness can’t protect
Doubt we’ll have; insecurity overcome
Love with another, but our love will always be
This poem is about two people realizing that their marriage was a mistake and that, as much as they don't want to admit it, their lives will not improve until they each go their separate ways.
